Hong Kong intends to set up an independent regulatory agencies to strengthen tourism

20, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government announced the tourism industry through the operation of public consultation and regulatory framework reforms, decided to set up an independent statutory yangtze cruise body, strengthen the supervision of the tourism industry.

Reform program will improve the travel agent the minimum capital requirement for a license in order to enhance the quality of the industry; to guide and leader of a statutory licensing scheme in order to improve their professionalism; establishment of an independent appeal mechanism to deal with for the trip supervisor Board decision appeal; trip monitoring Bureau will achieve self-financing, with funds mainly from the exit levy groups, travel agents' group registration fee and the mainland immigrants. The Government will provide one for the trip supervisor Bureau grants to fund its initial operations.

Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development Gregory So, 20, said at a press conference, which will help eliminate for the tourism industry "insiders control their own people," the criticism, in order to improve the overall architecture of the independence, credibility and transparency. "We expect the new regulatory regime can further enhance the quality of tourism services, and maintain long-term healthy development of the tourism industry in Hong Kong."

He pointed out that the Government next step will be to draft a new legislation to replace the existing "Travel Agents Ordinance" (Cap 218). Satisfactory progress, expected to be about two and a half to the Legislative Council after the new Bill.
